*Thomas François Cartier (1879–1943)
Thomas François Cartier was a French sculptor and one of the last representatives of the animalier style—a mid-19th-century movement characterized by naturalistic and romantically styled depictions of animals, in painting as well as in sculpture. He was born on February 21, 1879, in Marseille.
Education
He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under the direction of the renowned animalier sculptor Georges Gardet (1863–1939).
Style and subjects
Cartier specialized in small-scale works depicting hunting dogs and large felines, often integrated into clocks and other decorative objects. His animal sculptures—particularly lions and other big cats—were noted for their high anatomical accuracy. Many of his works were cast in white metal as well as in bronze.
Career
From 1904 onward, he exhibited his works at the Paris Salon and received a Gold Medal in 1927. He also participated in the Salon of the Société des Artistes Français in 1912, and his works are listed in the collections of the Musée d’Orsay.
Legacy
Although few biographical details have been recorded, Cartier’s bronzes remain highly sought after on the art market. He died in 1943.
