AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Emil Kuhlmann-Reher (Lübeck 1886–1957 Munich)

Pipe and wine

Oil on canvas, signed lower left “E. Kuhlmann-Reher München”

56.5 × 49 cm

An old man in seventeenth-century costume sits in a tavern. He wears a broad black hat, a white collar, a brown buttoned jerkin and green velvet sleeves, and holds a painted beer mug. A long clay pipe is in his mouth; the bowl rests in his other hand on the table. Beside him stands a blue-and-white stoneware jug with a pewter mount. A copper pan hangs on the wall, with a small framed picture above it and a column at the left.

Kuhlmann-Reher was a Munich genre painter. He studied at the Munich Academy and made his name with tavern and peasant subjects in the Munich tradition: costume, pipe, jug and a half-smile, painted smoothly and tightly. The signature and the word München are lower left. The signature has been checked under ultraviolet light and is consistent with the paint layer.

Support and frame

Oil on canvas. The present wooden frame and the cardboard backing are later. The backing carries a modern label of Poster-Club, Łódź, framing company.

"The frame visible in the photo is included as a courtesy and does not form an integral part of the work. Any damage to the frame will not be a valid reason for complaints or cancellations of the order"

Condition

Varnish present, with fine age craquelure. A few small light scuffs and scratches in the table top. Not cleaned. Study the detail photographs.
