L'Esprit des Almanachs, or analysis of all almanacs, by Wolf d'Orfeuil (N. Le Camus de Mézières), a reissue published in Paris by La Veuve Duchesne, in French, 560 pages, leather-bound in a reasonable condition.
Description from the seller
Wolf d'Orfeuil, pseudonym of N. Le Camus de Mézières: L'Esprit des Almanachs, or critical and curious analysis of all almanacs, both ancient and modern. In Paris, Chez la Veuve Duchesne 1783. 2 volumes in 1.
Wolf d'Orfeuil: Pierre-Paul d'Orfeuil (or Wolf d'Orfeuil), is none other than the famous 18th-century actor, troupe director and French dramatist Dorfeuille.
(XXII) Introduction, [VI] Calendar, 249 pp. - 283 pp., 1fb. 16x10cm.
This is a critical, satirical, and witty analysis of the phenomenon of almanacs. At the end of the 18th century, these small popular booklets swarmed and dealt with every possible subject (astrology, sciences, practical advice, fashions, poems). Faithful to the tone of the era and the author’s verve, the book reviews these popular publications with irony and curiosity. This historical work has been reissued in modern editions (notably print-on-demand by Hachette Livre / BNF) as part of the preservation of French literary heritage.
Binding (publisher, era) in brown marbled calf leather, smooth spine ornamented with gilded fillets surrounding faux compartments adorned with acorns and gilt tooling; title piece missing on the spine (see photo). Tranches jaspées.
Frottements, usure d'usage sur coins (érasés) et bordures, mors fendus, usure d'usage en tête et queue de dos, griffures et frottements d'usage sur le cuir des plats. Intérieur satisfaisant.
