Description from the seller

A magnificent bronze sculpture by J. Štursa. (1880–1925) He was a Czech sculptor and one of the founders of modern Czech sculpture. The bust is very characteristic of Štursa's early modernist period (around 1900–1915). The work combines his academic discipline under the guidance of the great Czech master Josef Václav Myslbek with newer influences from that time, such as symbolism and early expressionism. The rough, unpolished surface of the drapery and shoulders creates a striking contrast with the more finished details in the face. This play of light and texture is typical of Štursa.

Štursa was born in the mountainous area of the Vysočina region. He studied sculpture in Hořice. He also worked as a stonemason. Later, Štursa studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under Professor Josef Myslbek, a well-known Czech sculptor.
