Description from the seller
An enchanting and evocative oil painting on panel, datable to the late 19th century, depicting a spectacular night view of Venice during a grand city celebration, with the canal crowded with gondolas and boats and the buildings illuminated by numerous lights.
The composition effectively conveys the atmosphere of nineteenth-century Venice, transformed on this occasion into a stage of lights, colours and movement. A multitude of small figures animates both banks and the numerous boats, rendered through swift touches of white, red, orange, pink and green which, viewed from the right distance, convey the impression of a lively and festive crowd.
At the center of the scene emerges a characteristic circular-shaped luminous structure, painted in intense golden tones. Its light reflects directly on the dark water surface, creating one of the focal points of the whole composition. Around it unfolds a continuous sequence of gondolas and boats crowded with people.
On the right dominates a large Venetian building topped by a dome, while along the quays buildings, decorations and numerous light points stand out. Particularly dramatic is the sequence of orange-hued lights on the right, which seems to extend toward the center of the canal, guiding the eye into the composition.
Great attention is paid to the effects of light on the water. The surface of the lagoon is built with deep tones of green, blue and brown, pierced by golden and light reflections. The painter avoids a rigidly descriptive rendering and instead uses a free, vibrant brushwork, particularly effective in suggesting the movement of the water, the crowd and the nocturnal atmosphere.
The sky also greatly contributes to the charm of the work: large masses of clouds and billowy vapour cross the upper part of the composition, illuminated in some spots and deeper in others, creating a strong contrast with the warm lights of the festa below.
The painting fits into the tradition of 19th-century Venetian vedute, a genre particularly appreciated by international audiences who, during the nineteenth century, remained fascinated by the romantic and picturesque image of Venice. In this case the interest is not directed only at the architecture, but above all at the atmosphere, the light and the life of the city, captured during a moment of great animation.
The work bears no visible signature and is therefore offered as Italian school, late 19th century.
The painting is adorned with a beautiful gold wooden frame with wide dark inner margins, particularly suited to the nocturnal palette of the work and able to enhance its light points. Normal signs of wear and aging are present, visible in the photographs and consistent with the period.
