Romantic landscape with ruins, river and boat, oil on canvas from the 19th century, Italy, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Oil on canvas dated 1847 and signed in the lower right corner “C. Markó.” The work can be attributed to the famous dynasty of landscape painters of Hungarian origin working in Italy, linked to the name of Károly / Carlo Markó the Elder (1791–1860) and his son Carlo Markó the Younger (1822–1891). The dating of 1847 places the canvas at the height of the family school’s prominence in Tuscany: a period in which both the patriarch and the son shared the same lyrical approach to the landscape, the same idyllic-classical composition and signing method, entirely analogous, making this canvas a emblematic testimony of the unmistakable Markó style of the mid-nineteenth century.
The composition unfolds along a tranquil basin of water, where in the foreground one can discern a small boat with figures, rendered with quick yet meticulous brushstrokes. Dominating the scene is the imposing central rock spur, on the summit of which stand the ruins of a fortified structure immersed in vegetation. The color scheme plays on warm tones, earth shadows, and natural ochers, with a clear, oblique light that well defines the volumes of the rocks and the different planes of depth.
From a conservation point of view the canvas is generally in good condition. The painted surface retains its original patina with a slight and uniform period craquelure, clear evidence of authenticity and proper aging of the materials. The work is on its original frame and is enclosed in a refined gilded wooden frame with classical-style moldings.
Dimensions:
Only canvas: 47.5 x 41 cm
With frame: 60 x 53 cm
