Oreste Panzarella (XXI), Da Sassoferrato - Madonna in preghiera

Oreste Panzarella - “Madonna in Prayer”

Homage to Giovanni Battista Salvi of Sassoferrato, 2026
Oil on canvas, 60 × 50 cm

This work masterfully embodies the refined expressive purity and intimate mysticism typical of Sassoferrato’s output. The painting depicts the Virgin Mary caught in a moment of deep and silent devotion, with her gaze softly directed downward and hands joined in prayer.
The artist, renowned for his archaizing style inspired by Renaissance masters such as Raphael, here departs from the complexities of contemporary Baroque to embrace a crisp composition that is geometrically balanced. Dominating the scene is the chromatic contrast between the pure white of the veil and the intense ultramarine of the mantle, laid on with a glazed and almost flawless brushwork. Emerging from a dark background free of distracting elements, the figure exudes a sense of universal sanctity, timeless serenity, and formal composure.
