AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Hollandse school (ca. 1890)
Signed. J.J. Spohler fecit
River landscape
Oil on oak panel

A very large masterwork from the late 19th century signed J.J. Spohler f. Presumably this is a follower or pupil in the style of J.J. Spohler. It is a atmospheric and very finely worked Dutch river landscape painted in the tradition of Dutch Romanticism. The artist paid much attention to the light and the layered Dutch sky, which gives the whole piece a warm appearance. The quality of this work is very high. The painting is housed in a matching, richly decorated classical frame which gives it a museum-like appearance.

Nice to see in this work is how the painter faithfully follows the typical 19th-century painting style. The style follows the technical traditions of slowly building up transparent layers as many master painters of the 19th century did. This results in endless tones in both the light and shadow areas which reminds us of painters such as Johannes Bosboom, Andreas Schelfhout, Charles Leickert and Abraham Hulk.

For the best photo quality you should view this most easily on a laptop.
