Photograph taken on January 20, 1961, in Washington D.C., immediately after John Fitzgerald Kennedy's inauguration ceremony at the United States Capitol.
John F. Kennedy and his wife Jackie Kennedy appear in the open-top presidential limousine, leaving the Capitol to join the presidential rostrum where the inaugural parade will take place. Wearing his top hat, the new president is accompanied by Jackie Kennedy in this first official sequence of the day following his accession to the presidency.
Kreiner captures here an emblematic moment of the inauguration, as the presidential couple traverses Washington amid security forces, official representatives, and the crowd gathered to witness this historic day. The image elegantly testifies to the solemn and popular atmosphere surrounding the early hours of Kennedy's presidency.
