Italian School (XX) – Urban scene with market – 1974

Interesting Italian oil on canvas dated 1974, depicting a lively urban view with architecture, shops and numerous figures.

The scene is built around a large arched passage leading to an interior street, while in the background a distinctive bell tower topped by a weathercock rises. In the foreground and along the street are portrayed sellers, passers-by and small groups of people, with stalls and commercial activities giving the composition the character of a quotidian life scene.

Particularly pleasant is the rendering of the buildings, with deliberately irregular plaster, roofs, shutters, clotheslines and shop curtains. The palette is dominated by warm, subdued tones – ocher, earths, greens and gray-blue – which contribute to the atmosphere of the view.

On the back of the canvas there is a handwritten inscription by the author, accompanied by the date “April 1974” and a signature. The signature has not been positively identified and, in the absence of further documentary evidence, the work is prudently presented as Italian School of the 20th century.

The canvas retains its wooden frame; on the lower crossbar there is also a stamp relating to the trade/supply of painting materials, partially legible.

Condition

The work is in condition compatible with its age, with signs of time and use. There are wear, small abrasions and irregularities, especially along the edges of the canvas.

On the reverse, stains and widespread alterations of the canvas are visible, clearly documented in the photographs. No restyling interventions are identifiable from the images.
