AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Antique stoneware tapping barrel "Jonge Klave" with tin tap, Merwestein Den Haag, 19th century

Netherlands, approximately 1870

Antique salt-glazed stoneware tapping vat with tin tap faucet, intended for tapping gin. The bulging, cylindrical form has two necks with thickened rims (a filling opening and an air/vent opening). At the bottom is a tin faucet with its own hallmark stamp. The brown, speckled salt-glazed finish runs over the shoulder into brown drip marks. On the front is the name "Jonge Klave" in Gothic letters, with red-black painting and red flourishes. In the wall is a relief stamp bearing a coat of arms or emblem, the number "10" (capacity in litres) and "MERWESTEIN DEN HAAG". A beautiful example of a Dutch drinking vessel from the time when gin was still sold from the barrel at the tap.

Good condition for its age, with intact glaze and natural signs of use. The tin faucet is complete with a nice patina.
