Ritratto di Pieter Paul Rubens, an oil on canvas portrait from the XVII century by a Venetian school, Italy, depicting a portrait and sold with a contemporaneous carved and gilded frame.
Description from the seller
Portrait of Pieter Paul Rubens
Field: Venetian / central-Italian artist
Period: Late 17th – early 18th century
Technique: Oil on canvas
Painting dimensions: 70×53 cm
Dimensions with frame: 88×70.5 cm
Frame: Contemporary in carved and gilded wood with acanthus motifs and angular cartouches
Historical-critical description
The work constitutes a fine contemporary Baroque copy of the famous Self-portrait by Pieter Paul Rubens, the original of which is preserved in the Uffizi Galleries in Florence (it entered the Medici collections in 1683 upon purchase by Grand Prince Ferdinando de' Medici or donated to Grand Duke Cosimo III).
The painterly handling and the warm tones of the flesh recall the manner of a master active between Veneto and central Italy from the end of the seventeenth century to the early eighteenth century, a period in which private collecting insisted on replicas of Medicean masterpieces destined for travelers of the Grand Tour. The canvas is presented within a rich period frame carved and gilded in guazzo (water-gilded) and in excellent state of preservation.
