Description from the seller
Jan van den Hurk (1917-2002). Harbor view of Hellevoetsluis. Oil on canvas. Including frame, the dimensions are 66 x 61 centimeters. The painting and the frame are in good condition.
A lovely and atmospheric harbor view of Hellevoetsluis by the Dutch artist Jan van den Hurk.
Van den Hurk has here captured the characteristic maritime atmosphere of Hellevoetsluis in a striking way. In the foreground there is a inland navigation or working ship on the calm water. Behind it unfolds the harbor with various vessels, masts, and buildings. Above everything rises the distinctive church tower, which acts as a vertical accent that governs the composition and makes the cityscape recognizable.
What is particularly attractive is the loose, powerful painting technique. With broad and sometimes paste-like strokes, the artist builds up the harbor scene without getting lost in meticulous detail. Especially the water and the cloudy sky are painted with a strong sense of atmosphere. The subdued blue, gray, and green tones are beautifully broken up by warm red, orange, and earth tones in the ships and buildings.
The reflections in the water, the silhouettes of the ships, and the softly rendered background create depth and an impressionistic atmosphere.
