Josef Michael Mayburger (often also written Joseph, 1814 – 1908) was a notable Austrian Romantic landscape painter, teacher, and active local politician who decisively shaped the cityscape and the cultural heritage of Salzburg. Contrary to older sources that occasionally state 1813, he was born on 30 March 1814 in Straßwalchen.
-----
Mayburger is regarded as the first native of Salzburg to establish himself in the 19th century as a recognized landscape painter. Until then the region was mainly a destination for traveling artists.
His artistic training included study under Georg Pezolt and Johann Fischbach. He was also a member of the “Kleinen Akademie” founded by Fischbach.
-----
The prices for smaller oil paintings by Josef Mayburger typically range at auctions in the major Austrian art houses between €1,000 and €4,000.
