Solid wood Balinese guardian mask, 27 × 22 cm, with a fan-shaped headdress and detailed reliefs, dating to the 21st century, provenance Galerie/Antiquitätenhändler, in good condition and described as a generally overhauled original.
Description from the seller
Impressive, massively carved wooden mask from Bali, Indonesia, with extraordinarily detailed and expressive design.
It depicts a terrifying, demonically rendered face with large protruding eyes, strong eyebrows, a wide-open mouth and numerous carved teeth or fangs. The face is surrounded by an elaborately worked, fan-shaped headpiece as well as numerous floral and curved ornaments.
The design clearly recalls the Balinese tradition of guardian figures and mask representations. Comparable Balinese wooden masks with large eyes, an open mouth, and visible teeth are documented, for example, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The mask is not hollow, but made of solid wood and, for its size, exceptionally heavy and substantial. The numerous hand-carved recesses and reliefs create a strong three-dimensional effect.
Dimensions: approx. 27 × 22 cm
Material: solid wood, colorfully finished
Origin: Bali, Indonesia
Object: carved guardian/mask, wall object
Style: Balinese folk art / traditional mask carving
Weight: heavy and massive, not hollow
The surface shows age- and use-related marks, wear, and a beautiful natural patina. These give the piece its characteristic historical character.
