Portrait titled 'Hombre con laud', an oil on canvas from the 19th century, of Spanish origin, unsigned, in acceptable condition, measuring 110 cm by 95 cm with the original frame.
Description from the seller
Magnificent oil portrait on canvas from the period (19th century), which reproduces with extraordinary fidelity and technical mastery the celebrated masterpiece "Hombre con laúd" (c. 1627) by Sir Anthony van Dyck, of which the original is kept at the Museo Nacional del Prado (Madrid).
Aesthetic and Pictorial Quality:
The work stands out for outstanding technical execution that emulates perfectly the virtuosity of Flemish Baroque. The anonymous painter demonstrates an absolute mastery of chiaroscuro, modeling the knight's face with dramatic lighting that emerges softly from the depths of a dark, shadowed background. The details of the white lace collar (ruff) and the folds of the heavy black garment are resolved with firm brushstrokes and academically refined glazes of high quality, capturing the intense and psychological gaze of the sitter, historically attributed to the court virtuoso lutenist Jacob Gaultier.
Condition, Patina and Period Elements:
Surface: The painting presents a beautiful antique patina and an extremely fine and uniform craquelure, especially visible in the flesh tones and lighter areas, attesting to the oil’s organic aging and varnishes over decades.
Structure and verso: The canvas is mounted on its original period wooden frame with a central reinforcement crossbar, stretched and nailed entirely by hand. The back of the fabric shows the classic brown coloration and oxidation typical of old linen.
Provenance: The reverse of the frame and stretcher bears old cataloging labels and inventory marks (including a blue circular label and technical numbering), elements highly sought after by collectors that indicate its passage through old private collections or art rooms.
A piece of great visual impact, elegant bearing and high academic quality, ideal both for collectors of European classical painting and for high-decor projects.
Technique: Oil on canvas.
Epoch: 19th century
Measurements: 110x95 with frame / 85x70 canvas only
State of conservation: Good/Very good for its age, with minor peripheral wear and a stable natural craquelure that enhances its historic character. Ready to hang.
Shipping: Professionally sized packaging with high-security and insured shipping with global tracking code.
