CORPUS IURIS CIVILIS - Digestum Novus [Engravings], by Iustinianus I Imperator, Latin, first edition in this format, Lyon 1566, folio 40 x 27.5 cm, 914 pages, leather binding, in good condition.
Description from the seller
DESCRIPTION: I present at auction an EXCEPTIONAL and MONUMENTAL 460‑YEAR‑OLD specimen, of impressive dimensions (40 x 27.5 cm) and weighing 5 kg, which entirely contains the DIGESTUM NOVUM (Digest of the New Law), the cornerstone of Justinian's Corpus Iuris Civilis.
The Corpus Iuris Civilis is the magna opera and the most important doctrinal compilation of Roman Law, as well as the juridical text with the greatest influence in human history. The Digest (or Pandects) was traditionally divided into three large sections: the Old Digest (Digestum Vetus), the Infortiatum, and the New Digest (Digestum Novum). The work offered at auction today impeccably and completely gathers the Digestum Novum in its majestic Lyon print.
Printed in two inks (red and black) with the famous "Glossa Ordinaria of Accursius," this specimen stands out for its exceptional iconographic apparatus: it includes magnificent woodcut engravings and historiated initials of great beauty.
After carefully reviewing the market, I have not found any copy of this edition for sale. Likewise, in WorldCat, the world's largest bibliographic database, only a few copies are cataloged in institutions and universities. You are facing an unrepeatable opportunity to acquire a rare and unique copy currently on the market.
