Pastoral scene in landscape, XVII century, oil on canvas, Italy, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Pastoral scene with a pair of travelers and a musician
Venetian School, late seventeenth century
Oil on canvas
Elegant testimony of Venetian landscape painting from the late seventeenth century, this canvas fuses the arcadian taste for idealized nature with a refined narrative sensibility. The composition unfolds through a skilful balance between wooded masses, rocky backdrops and luminous openings that guide the eye toward an atmospheric horizon, while in the foreground a young couple crosses the path, accompanied by the gentle sound of an old shepherd playing the flute.
The scene is constructed with a painterly narration of classicist origin, in which the human figure becomes an integral, harmonious part of the landscape. The light, warm and golden, caresses the surfaces with soft veils, making the silken fabrics of the young woman’s pinkish dress and the precious ochre-yellow of the companion’s garment shimmer, creating a delicate chromatic dialogue with the deep greens of the vegetation and the browns of the rocks.
The work presents multisensory declinations: one seems to perceive the rustle of leaves moved by the breeze, the damp scent of earth and moss, the freshness of the shade cast by the trees, and the delicate sound of the flute that spreads through the valley,
For its compositional quality, luminous balance and executional finesse, the painting represents an interesting expression of Venetian figural culture between the Seventeenth and early Eighteenth centuries intersected with serene landscape painting of Roman lineage.
It comes from an important Florentine residence.
Accompanying the work is a patinated antique frame.
Dimensions: 84 cm x 68 cm.
