Apulejus / Max Klinger - Amor und Psyche - 1881

Max Klinger's large illustrated work "Amor and Psyche (Apuleius)" with a printed dedication to the musician Johannes Brahms. The book contains 46 original engravings by Klinger, of which 15 are large-format full-page plates. Small crease in the lower front area, otherwise very good condition, also the delicate light binding with gold applications. Gilded edges around the perimeter.

Publications with originals by Klinger are rare. The graphic works on Amor and Psyche spanned several years, and this book is a major work of the young Max Klinger, completed just before his move to Berlin and his work on several important sculptures.

Klinger was already well known and respected in his lifetime as a sculptor, painter, and graphic artist. His work is categorized within Symbolism; the page designs, especially the frames around Amor and Psyche, already point toward the later Art Nouveau.
