Description from the seller
Interesting work by the painter René Sautin (1881–1968), a well-known French landscape painter belonging to the Rouen School (Normandy), oil on stretched cardboard in good condition.
The work is sold without a frame.
Biography and Artistic Career
Formation: Born in Montfort-sur-Risle, he studied first at the Rouen School of Fine Arts and later in Paris at the Ferrier studio, receiving valuable guidance from the Impressionist master Albert Lebourg. Link with Normandy: In 1911 he settled permanently in Les Andelys. The vast majority of his paintings depict the Seine, the Norman villages, and the surrounding countryside. The war years: On June 8, 1940 the bombings destroyed much of Les Andelys. Sautin visually documented the destruction of his beloved town through a famous series of watercolors.
Painting Style From Impressionism to Fauvism: Initially influenced by Impressionism, around 1923 Sautin radically changed his style, arriving at a calm and reasoned Fauvism. The technique: He claimed that painting meant “spreading the matter and not stroking it.” His works are characterized by generous use of full-bodied color (thick impasto brushstrokes), bold contour lines, and bright and luminous tones. In the last years of his life, due to a progressive loss of sight, he further intensified the vivacity of his colors.
