Description from the seller
Item Description
This is a Bizen ware bowl by 山本出 Yamamoto Izuru (b. 1944), a ceramicist from Imbe in Okayama Prefecture. The bowl is made from Burgundy clay and has a pale, sandy body with an unglazed surface. Vivid orange-red firing streaks run down the exterior and across the interior. The wide, rounded form has a gently irregular rim and a low, trimmed foot. The interior shows fine throwing lines and a large orange patch at the centre. An incised mark is on the base. Yamamoto is known for blending traditional Bizen aesthetics with a modern sculptural sensibility.
Artist Profile
Yamamoto Izuru was born in 1944 in Imbe, Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture, the fourth son of Living National Treasure Yamamoto Toshu. He studied sculpture at Musashino Art University and learned ceramic techniques from his father. He then spent two years at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. After returning to Japan in 1970, he trained under his father and established his own kiln in 1975. He developed original techniques including Izusai, which blends pigments into Bizen clay, and Tsumikage, which stacks thin slabs of clay in layers. After encountering Burgundy clay in 1993, he fired works at the Château de Ratilly in Burgundy in 1995. His honours include the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition Encouragement Prize (1980), the Kaneshige Toyo Prize (1985) and the Okayama Prefecture Cultural Encouragement Award (1997). In 2012 he was designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property holder of Okayama Prefecture. His works are held in the Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, the Portland Art Museum and the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
