Description from the seller

[SONNINI, C. S.]
Voyage in Greece and Turkey, made by order of Louis XVI, and with the authorization of the Ottoman Court. Collection of Plates
In Paris, At F. Buisson, Printer-Librarian, Year IX (1801)

Atlas devoted to the collection of copper-engraved plates by J. B. P. Tardieu and other artists, illustrating the famous scientific and naturalist voyage of Charles Nicolas Sigisbert Sonnini de Manoncourt in Greece and in the Ottoman Empire.

The work contains a very large map and superb line and stipple engravings representing the fauna (such as the squid, Mediterranean fish, and rare species like the spider-scorpion or galéode), as well as plates of traditional costumes (e.g. the Costume of the Women of the Ile de l'Argentière).

Original edition of the atlas of plates, published in Paris by F. Buisson in Year IX (1801).

Octavo volume, contemporary Bradel binding with leather spine and title piece, boards covered in swirling marbled paper. Wear and rubbing to the joints and edges, but overall sound structure. Text pages and plates hors-texte well preserved, on good laid paper, with superb sharp engravings.
