Description from the seller
Emile Hendrik Godding (1841–1898) – The Letter
Atmospheric and richly developed genre scene by the Belgian painter Emile Hendrik Godding (1841–1898), signed “E. Godding” bottom left.
An elegantly dressed lady sits in a richly furnished interior and holds a letter in her outstretched hand. The colorful carpet, heavy curtains, flowers, paintings, furniture and decorative objects are depicted with lively brushwork. The letter forms the narrative centerpiece of this intimate composition.
Oil on panel
Panel: 60 × 46 cm
Including frame: 83 × 68 cm
Signed: bottom left “Godding”
The panel is in good original condition. Along some outer edges there is limited paint loss due to historical rubbing against the frame; this does not affect the actual depiction.
The painting is presented in its authentic, richly ornate gilded frame. It shows appropriate historical wear, craquelure and locally small losses, clearly visible in the photos.
The whole is very carefully and securely packed. Because of the age and fragility of the authentic frame, small ornament parts may detach during transport despite good packaging; any transport damage will be handled according to Catawiki’s terms and the carrier.
An attractive 19th-century Belgian genre work with a particularly decorative and imposing presentation.
Provenance: acquired from an old Belgian family collection. The work presumably dates from Godding’s Antwerp period in the late 19th century.
Careful and rapid worldwide shipping.
Certain interior images are generated for illustration.
