A lot of three Showa-period Kokeshi dolls in wood, including two Ojigi pieces by Asahi and one hand-painted Sosaku Kokeshi by Aoki Ryōka titled Hinagiku: Le petit chrysanthème, signed on the base.
Description from the seller
Here is a magnificent lot of 3 antique Kokeshi, from the Showa period.
The 2 dolls that are resting on their arms are Ojigi, a traditional Japanese art expressing welcome, gratitude and respect.
The rounded, clean lines are characteristic of the artist who created these two exceptional pieces: Asahi.
Dimensions:
H 11 x D 12 cm
H 8.5 x D 9 cm
The third Kokeshi is a Sosaku, entirely carved and hand-painted by the famous and highly respected female master artisan Aoki Ryoka.
Her handwritten signature is present under the base of the doll.
Her title is Hinagiku: The Little Chrysanthemum.
This rare piece is a superb example of Aoki Ryoka's delicate work. It stands out with an expression of great serenity with poetic closed eyes and finely drawn lashes. The three-dimensional work is remarkable.
The natural wood dress features a magnificent chrysanthemum (Kiku) decoration — a flower symbol of Japanese Imperial nobility — hand-painted in red and white, enhanced by subtle and rich touches of gold paint. A small red wooden carved bow crowns her geometric coiffure.
Aoki Ryoka has received numerous national honors, including the very prestigious Prime Minister's Prize of Japan, four times. Several of her works are part of the personal collection of the Japanese Imperial Family.
Dimensions: H 20 x D 7.5 cm
Kokeshi are now real collectible pieces.
