Description from the seller

Boyer Frères, Bronze Casters in Paris
France, Paris, second half of the 19th century

Patinated bronze, red marble and gilt bronze
Signed “L. Grégoire”
Marked “Boyer Frères, Bronziers à Paris”

Impressive and monumental French bronze sculpture from the second half of the 19th century, depicting Perseus freeing Andromeda, a famous scene from Greek mythology.

The sculpture shows the dramatic moment when Perseus frees Andromeda. The artist has paid great attention to the anatomy, movement and expression of both figures. The powerful stance of Perseus forms a beautiful contrast with the elegant figure of Andromeda, giving the composition a strongly dynamic character.

The bronze is finely cast and richly detailed, with particular attention to the modeling of the bodies, drapery and various attributes. The deep patination highlights the sculptural qualities and detailing of the figure.

The work is signed “L. Grégoire”, for the French sculptor Jean-Louis Grégoire (1840–1890), and also bears the mark “Boyer Frères, Bronziers à Paris”.

The statue stands on its original, heavy revolving base of red marble, richly finished with gilt bronze mounts. Thanks to the rotating mechanism, the sculpture can be viewed easily from different angles.

The marble base has been professionally restored in the past. The restoration is visible upon close inspection. Please examine the photos carefully; they are an integral part of the description and the condition report of the object.

Dimensions

Total dimensions: 78 × 65 × 43 cm, weight approx. 55 kg
Height of the bronze sculpture without the base: approx. 65 cm

An imposing example of 19th-century French bronze sculpture, in which classical mythology, romanticism and the high craftsmanship of Parisian bronze foundries come together.

Because of its size and weight, the sculpture will be carefully and professionally packaged for transport.

Please examine the photos carefully. The photos are an integral part of the description and the condition report.

All our objects are available for viewing by appointment in our showroom in Bilzen-Hoeselt, Belgium, prior to the auction.
