Description from the seller
Beautiful hand-painted Hindeloopen tray – traditional Frisian folk art from the Netherlands.
An antique hand-painted Hindeloopen tray with rich floral decoration, executed in the characteristic colors and style of the famous Frisian painting tradition. This decorative tray forms a splendid example of Hindelooper folk art, a art form dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries and closely linked to Friesland’s rich maritime history.
The oval tray features a deep red background on which a graceful composition of flowers and leaves is symmetrically applied. The refined painting with warm tones of orange, yellow, green and black creates a vivid contrast with the red ground. The edge is scrolled and adorned with delicate gold ornaments, entirely in the traditional Hindelooper style.
Hindeloopen developed from the 17th century into an important trading town with strong contacts with Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. The influences from these regions are clearly visible in the characteristic floral motifs, curls and decorative patterns that are typical of Hindelooper painting. Furniture, trays and household objects were often richly painted and formed an important part of the interior.
It is in beautiful condition. Width 50 cm x height 37 cm. It is signed RH. on the front.
