Description from the seller
Stunning handcrafted Japanese sculpture of a Daruma, turned from solid wood and hand-painted by Kazuo Takamizawa.
It was awarded the Prime Minister's Prize in Japan.
This work was created in November 1975 (inscribed S 50 / 11 beneath the base for the Shōwa 50 era).
Unlike the classical red papier-mâché Darumas, this model reveals the natural veins of the solid wood, highlighting the artisan's wood-turning craftsmanship.
The bold black brushstroke outlines the monastic cloak/robe (Kesa) draped around the body, painted freehand in a very dynamic calligraphic style (Sumi-e).
The gold/yellow band at the base provides contrast and evokes light as well as the sacred/prosperous dimension of the figure.
Very good vintage condition, beautiful original patina of the wood.
This is a perfect collectible piece for lovers of Japanese folk art (Sosaku / Kokeshi / Mingei).
Dimensions:
H 13 x D 10 cm
In Japanese tradition, the Daruma is a very powerful talisman embodying perseverance, success and the protection of the home (“Fall seven times, stand up eight”).
