Important Ancient Painting of the Late Nineteenth/Early Twentieth Century Italian
Michele Palumbo
(Calimera, 1874 - Lecce, 1949)
“Autumn still life” from 1929
Historicized authentic work
Michele Palumbo is certainly among the most important landscape artists of Salento between the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Di Calimera, a pupil of Paolo Emilio Stasi, moved from Lecce to Florence where he perfected his skills by attending the Academy of Fine Arts and the evening school of the well-known artist Giovanni Fattori (Macchiaioli). Having returned to Lecce he dedicated himself to painting, obtaining good results with displays in shop windows, exhibitions and murals. Later (1903) he frequented the studio of his painter friend Giuseppe Casciaro in Naples, also from Salento and originally from Ortelle. Here he improves his pastel technique. Having returned permanently to Lecce, he obtained important artistic results in exhibitions, clubs and private collections.
Some of Palumbo's oil landscapes on cardboard are valuable, but his intense pictorial production leads him to create still lifes, portraits, flowers and animals, often with an accentuated realist touch. In those years he was present in exhibitions in Bari, Gallipoli, Lecce, Rome and Milan. He died in Lecce in 1949, leaving an important artistic legacy to his son Mario, a painter like his father.
