Bob Buys was a 'rasschilder', as they say, and can be counted among the figuratives and colorists. Marquet, Matisse and Bonnard were initially his models. In the late forties he left late-impressionism for a broader construction of planes and a more continuous flow of the line.
He painted and watercolorled portraits, interiors, landscapes, harbor and city views. Bob Buys worked a lot in Amsterdam, Paris and from the fifties in Brittany but especially in the South of France (Port-Vendres) where he was drawn to the brilliance of color.

His compositions are surprising and often spatial. In addition, he seeks simplicity of means and constructive solidity. In the sixties he managed to push color even more into the adventurous. It ultimately yields vibrant work that at the same time evokes a mood of luxurious calm. His paintings testify to a warm painter’s joy and great craftsmanship. Besides painting, Bob Buys was a born watercolorist, who knew how to exploit all the advantages of the watercolors. He kept his sheets translucent without that losing any of their form and color power.
In 1945 Bob Buys was co-founder of the Dutch Watercolorists Circle.

In art history emphasis is mainly on artists who fulfilled a front-line function. Consequently, many artists have not received the attention they deserve. It is encouraging to see that in recent years there has been a re-evaluation of a group of painters who worked in the first half of the 20th century and who, in their own way, responded to the many new currents that arose at the beginning of the 20th century in painting. Bob Buys occupies a prominent place there in the Netherlands.
