André Franquin (Brussels, 1924–1997) is a legendary Belgian comic artist and one of the absolute icons of Franco-Belgian comic art. He is world-famous as the creator of Gaston Lagaffe (the chaotic anti-hero) and as the principal artist of the classic Spirou & Fantasio series (1950s–1960s). Franquin is known for his brilliant humor, dynamic drawing style, masterful coloring, and unprecedented level of detail. His influence on later generations of comic artists (including in the Clear Line and humor comics) is enormous. Works such as *The Grey Dreams* and *Gaston* are among the highlights of European comic history.
