AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

A lovely copy of this scarce limited illustrated edition of Antoine Hamilton’s fairy tale.

Large oblong softback. Text in calligraphic lettering by Danielle Royen and illustrated in colour by the Belgian artist Marie Howet. The illustrations were originally created in 1927 and were published here for the first time.

Limited edition of 400 copies numbered on bouffant from the Koninklijke Nederlandse Papierfabriek including 50 Hors Commerce. This is without number and is not signed - so is possibly one of the 50 hors commerce copies.

Originally published in 1730, this tale by Antoine Hamilton is an imitation / successor to 'Arabian Nights', the story being told by Dinarzade, the sister of Scheherazade.

Soft covers are in very good, clean condition. A couple of tiny marks to the cover only. Now covered in removable archival protective wrap.

Internally clean and tidy throughout.

131, [1] pages. 30 x 40 cm.

Hamilton, Irish-born, wrote this in the 1700s to mock the craze for the Arabian Nights: a princess whose eyes kill any man who looks at her. Marie Howet, the Belgian Prix de Rome painter who loved Achill Island, illustrated it, and it was published in 400 copies in 1983, the year before she died.

This is an 18th-century spoof of the Arabian Nights by an Irish-born courtier, illustrated by a Belgian expressionist who loved Ireland.

Antoine Hamilton (1646?–1720) is best known for the Mémoires du comte de Grammont

He wrote this tale partly to amuse Henrietta Bulkley, sister of the Duchess of Berwick, to whom he was much attached.

Marie Howet (1897–1984) was a Belgian expressionist painter

This was her last book to be published.
