Description from the seller

Stunning illustrated and numbered edition 866 on Rag Paper in the form of this jubilant encounter between Pagnol’s southern theater and Dubout’s graphic humor, giving rise to a work in which popular speech and caricatured figures join forces in a celebration of Marseille identity.

In this illustrated version, Marius, the first part of the Marseille trilogy (Marius, Fanny, César), takes on a new visual dimension thanks to Albert Dubout’s uproarious drawings, which brilliantly portray the colorful characters of the Old Port: César, the owner of the Marine bar; Marius, his son torn between the lure of the sea and his love for Fanny; Panisse the jovial grocer; and a whole gallery of picturesque figures.

Pagnol’s text retains its theatrical liveliness, its dialogic rhythm, and its deep humanity, but the 1949 edition emphasizes the comic and tender traits by adding plates and vignettes where Dubout plays with disproportions, facial expressions, and amusing situations.
