Description from the seller
This is an antique Japanese export silver box with repoussé reliefs of dragons and symbols, probably late 19th–early 20th century (Meiji period).
Japanese, Meiji period (ca. 1890–1920), silver-plated metal with finely hammered decoration in eastern symbolism for jewelry or pills.
The lid features a relief of blooming chrysanthemums (kiku), a traditional and symbolic Japanese floral motif associated with the imperial household and often appears on Meiji- and Taisho-period metalwork (ca. 1868–1926). The flowers are rendered in raised relief against a background with a basketweave pattern, a classic decorative element in Japanese metalwork from that era. The sides of the box are also adorned with floral motifs.
