AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Large monumental brass water vessel (Kudam / Thavalai) – Tamil Nadu, India – Mid 20th century (6 kg)

Description:

An unusually large traditional water vessel from South India (Tamil Nadu region), crafted in the mid-20th century. This type of bulbous pots is locally known as Kudam or Thavalai and traditionally used for drawing, cooling, and storing water or milk.

The vessel impresses with its monumental presence and masterful hand craftsmanship. It was hammered from heavy brass and features a characteristic, hand-hammered texture in the lower third, which contributes to high stability. The wonderful, dark original patina on the lower section testifies to decades of authentic use, while the shoulder and neck retain the golden sheen of brass.

Particularly noteworthy are the two massive, side-mounted brass rings (carrying handles). Near the handle mounts, the object bears traditional punch marks/manufacturer marks (see detail photos along the inner rim), which is a rare quality feature in these historical everyday objects.

Today this magnificent piece is ideally suited as an exclusive decorative object, monumental vase, or floor vessel in a Wabi-Sabi and Colonial style.
