Giovanni Boccaccio.
CONTEXT AND SIGNIFICANCE
Composed in Latin starting in the 1350s and dedicated to Hugh IV of Lusignan, the Genealogia deorum gentilium is one of the most extensive medieval mythographic treatises. In its fifteen books Boccaccio reconstructs the genealogies of the pagan gods, interpreting myths allegorically and defending the value of poetry. Betussi’s translation helped bring the work to a wider audience and accompanied its fortune in Renaissance literary and figurative culture.
BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF THE AUTHOR
Giovanni Boccaccio (1313–1375), writer and humanist, is one of the central figures of Italian literature of the 14th century. Alongside vernacular works, including the Decameron, he composed important Latin texts of erudite and humanist character. Giuseppe Betussi (circa 1512–circa 1573), a scholar and translator, prepared the Italian version of the Genealogia and added the life of Boccaccio.
PRINTING HISTORY AND CIRCULATION
Betussi’s Italian translation first appeared in 1547. This Venetian edition of 1554, printed “at the Sign of the Diamond” by Comin da Trino di Monferrato and dedicated to Count Collaltino di Collalto, belongs to the early fifteenth-century (sixteenth-century) print runs of the vernacular work. The volume gathers the fifteen books, Boccaccio’s life, the head tables, the index of names, and the woodcut genealogical trees.
BIBLIOGRAPHY AND REFERENCES
A classical item in Boccaccian bibliography and Renaissance mythography; of particular interest for the 1554 edition, the contemporary binding, and the manuscript annotations.
