AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Beautiful, large paper first edition of this work. Bound in full dark blue Morocco binding, signed by J. Bonnemort. With a double filet to the boards, and simple, yet beautiful Taurus bull design in gilt to the front board. Gilt titles to the spine. Doublures with real pressed flowers under tissue.

Original covers are bound in, with a colour design by Carzou.

Signed by Maurois to the half title, with a dedication to Roger Bellon ("ami des beaux livres").

Consists of dialogues between notable figures - historical, literary or cultural - used by Maurois to explore ideas about life, art, society and human conduct. It belongs to the tradition of the philosophical dialogue, but is written in Maurois’s accessible, conversational style rather than as a formal academic treatise.

The large paper edition on Papier Hollande van Gelder was limited to only 50 copies, this being number 37.

A fabulous copy of this work.

208 pages. 22 x 16 cm.

Maurois became one of the most widely read French writers of the 20th century. He was a great Anglophile: he served as a liaison officer with the British Army in the First World War, inspired his first success, Les Silences du colonel Bramble (1918), an affectionate portrait of the British officer. Maurois inscribed this copy to Roger Bellon, “ami des beaux livres” (“friend of fine books”). Bellon was very probably the industrialist behind the Laboratoires Roger Bellon pharmaceutical company and a collector of fine books.
