Description from the seller

Beautiful oil on a mahogany panel by Adolphe Charles MARAIS (Honfleur 1856 - Gonneville-sur-Honfleur 1940) signed at the bottom right (artist's stamp)

Painter of landscapes and pastoral subjects, Adolphe Marais was a pupil of the animal painter Georges Busson and Narcisse Berchère, then César De Cock. He also received advice from his neighbor Eugène Boudin, born in Honfleur like him. The young Honfleurian met the residents of the Saint-Siméon farm, and his friend Charles-François Daubigny also gave him advice. It was Daubigny, encountered in Honfleur, who encouraged him to become a painter and to study in Paris. He particularly admires Corot. Constant Troyon inspires him to create grand canvases. He exhibited at the Salon from 1876 to 1914. Sociétaire des Artistes Français in 1883
