Henri Ghéon – Saint Nicolas – Élisabeth Ivanovsky – 1936 – First edition
Description
Henri Ghéon – Saint Nicolas
Illustrations by Élisabeth Ivanovsky
Desclée de Brouwer, 1936.
Charming and uncommon illustrated French edition of Saint Nicolas, with the distinctive illustrations of Élisabeth Ivanovsky.
Complete – all 47 pages are present.
The interior is remarkably fresh and well preserved for a children’s book approaching 90 years of age. The pages are clean and the illustrations retain their strong original colours. Please see the photographs, which form an important part of the condition description.
The original illustrated binding shows age and handling wear, particularly to the edges, corners and spine. No attempt has been made to restore or improve the book.
The volume also has an interesting Danish provenance. It bears the bookseller’s label of Sankt Ansgars Boghandel, Copenhagen, as well as the ownership stamp of Knud Westh, physician, Løveapoteket, Thisted.
A fortunate survivor: this copy was recently discovered among discarded books at a recycling centre in Copenhagen and rescued before disposal.
An attractive and complete example of Ivanovsky’s work, with particularly well-preserved illustrated pages.
