Description from the seller
Set of 5 antique Japanese porcelain plates – Bijin in a kimono in relief – polychrome and gilt décor – Japan – Showa period
Very beautiful set of five Japanese porcelain plates, featuring a remarkable figurative relief decor.
Each plate depicts an elegant bijin (美人), a young Japanese woman dressed in a sumptuous traditional kimono, whose silhouette and clothing are delicately shaped in relief. The kimono is richly decorated with traditional Japanese floral and geometric motifs, in a fine palette of blue, green, red-orange, pink, and yellow, enhanced with gilded highlights.
The composition is particularly original: the irregular shape of the plate follows the drawing of the kimono, giving the piece an almost sculptural appearance. The young woman’s white face and long black hair provide an elegant contrast with the richness of the decor.
The back and the foot are also decorated in blue underglaze with stylized plant motifs, evidence of careful decorative work extending to the lower part of the pieces.
Estimated period: Japan, Showa period, probably around 1930–1960.
This dating remains stylistic estimation, no clearly identifiable manufacturer’s mark is visible.
Dimensions of each piece:
Width: approximately 18.3 cm
Height: approximately 3 cm
Number of pieces: 5
This set was acquired in Japan at an online auction about ten years ago, for a price of around 30,000 yen.
A beautiful decorative and collectible set, particularly interesting for its relief bijin motif, the richness of the kimono patterns, and its gilded details.
Condition: please examine the photographs carefully, which are an integral part of the description.
