TEKTITE meteorite, polished indochinite from Laos (Indochina), weight 38 g.
Description from the seller
Tektites (from the Greek tektos, melted) are natural glassy objects formed by the impact of large meteorites on the Earth's surface. Tektites are the driest minerals known, with an average water content of 0.005%. This is very rare, since most of the craters where tektites formed were underwater before the impact. It has also been discovered partially fused zircon within some tektites. This, along with the water content, suggests that tektites formed at very high temperatures and pressures (similar to those required to form diamond).
Indochinites, like the one in this lot, formed by the impact of a large meteorite about 800,000 years ago, in what is today Laos, according to the most recent studies. The shock was brutal, so that molten material covered 10% of the Earth's surface, with indochinites even found in Antarctica.
The specimen in this lot is of good size, nicely shaped, and perfectly polished. Do not miss this opportunity!
