Description from the seller
2011 Protos - Ribera del Duero Gran Reserva - 3 Bottles (0.75L)
The winery was founded in 1927 in Peñafiel (Valladolid) by a group of 11 local viticulturists who joined forces to produce high-quality wine in the Duero basin.
In its early days, the winery adopted the name "Bodegas Ribera del Duero".
The Protos Name and the Creation of the D.O.
Pioneers of the name: The word Protos comes from Greek and means "First".
Trademark transfer: In the 1980s, when the official Denomination of Origin for the entire wine region was formalized, the winery freely ceded its trade name (Ribera del Duero) to the Regulatory Council of the D.O. From that moment, the firm officially became Bodegas Protos.
Facilities and Historic Underground
One of Protos' most distinctive elements is its infrastructure:
Underground galleries: The original winery is located on the slope of the historic Peñafiel Castle. It features more than 2 kilometers of underground galleries carved into the mountain, with natural conditions ideal (constant temperature and humidity) for aging in oak barrels and in bottle.
The legal and characteristic aging times for Protos Gran Reserva 2011 (D.O. Ribera del Duero) correspond to a total aging of 60 months (5 years) between barrel and bottle:
In oak barrel aging: A minimum of 24 months (2 years) in oak barrels (mostly French oak) and American.
In bottle: A minimum of 36 months (3 years) resting in the underground cellar before market release.
THE 2011 RIBERA DEL DUERO HARVEST RECEIVES THE
EXCELLENT RATING.
Always in a private cellar with controlled temperature.
