An authentic, handmade Japanese Kendo mask (Men) from the 1960s, original and in vintage condition with natural patina, featuring indigo-dyed sashiko stitching on blue protection flaps, a brass/copper alloy mesh frame with leather-edged rims, and the original inner name label 黒田 (Kuroda).
Description from the seller
Description:
Offered: a beautiful, authentic Japanese Kendo mask (Men) from the previous century (estimated: 60s/70s). This mask has a splendid, well-worn look and exudes the atmosphere of traditional Japanese martial arts (Budo). An absolute centerpiece for the collector, enthusiasts of Japanese culture, or as a unique focal point in a modern or industrial interior.
Special features & details:
• Authentic & handmade: The blue fabric protective flaps (men-futon) are stitched by hand with traditional sashiko and dyed with natural indigo (aizome), resulting in a beautiful, subtle fading.
• Historical context: On the inside, the original fabric name label remains with the handwritten surname of the first owner: 黒田 (Kuroda).
• Characteristic patina: The robust metal latticework (mengane) is made of brass/copper alloy and has developed a beautiful, natural patina over the years. The edges are finished with traditional leather.
• Condition: The mask is in an authentic, vintage state with natural signs of aging (see photos). It is precisely this 'wabi-sabi' aesthetic (the beauty of imperfection and impermanence) that gives the object its unique character.
