Description from the seller

Title: Darío the Great and the Persians

School: Flamenca (17th century)

Author: Attributed to the circle of Frans Francken II

Style: Baroque historical

Technique: Oil on copper

Interesting composition with a historical and courtly subject, attributed to Frans Francken I, in which a ceremonial scene is depicted, set in the Persian world. The work shows a sovereign enthroned beneath a rich canopy, surrounded by soldiers, courtiers and female figures, while several characters approach bearing offerings and valuable metal objects carefully worked. In the background an urban scene with fortified architecture and groups of figures unfolds, expanding the visual narrative and giving the whole piece depth and dynamism.

The painting presents a careful scenic organization, very typical of Flemish Baroque, where the accumulation of characters, theatrical gesture, and taste for detail build a image of great narrative richness. The refinement in the representation of attire, the attributes of power, the metallic vessels placed in the foreground, and the contrast between the palace area in shadow and the bright expanse of the background all stand out. All of this points to an artistic sensibility interested in history, staging, and decorative meticulousness.

Frans Francken I was a Flemish painter active between the 16th and 17th centuries, belonging to a distinguished family of Amberes artists. His production and that of his family circle contributed to the development of history painting and cabinet painting in Flanders, influencing later generations with his taste for complex narrative compositions, anecdotal richness, and technical detail.

The work is presented framed with a carved and gilded wooden frame, wide profile, decorated with vegetal motifs and classic-inspired arabesques. Its gilded finish enhances the solemn and ornamental character of the composition, blending harmoniously with the historicist aesthetics of the whole.

Observations:

It presents restorations.

The work may suffer damage during transport even with proper packaging. In that case, we will require photographs of the flaws to proceed with compensation. Customer satisfaction is always our priority.

Exceptionally, shipping costs may be affected by a surcharge due to causes such as being outside a continental territory, excess dimensions or weight of the item. PremiArt will not cover this surcharge under any circumstances.

Due to border issues with Switzerland we are obliged to inform that shipments longer than 1 meter in length or height to that destination will not be carried out.
