Louis Barnaba (1826–1892), Belgian marine painter

“Full Moon over Sailing Ships,” 19th century.

Large-format maritime scene with several sailboats on the water, waterfront buildings, and a bright full moon above the nocturnal landscape. The atmospheric depiction is typical of 19th-century maritime painting.

The painting is handwritten lower right with the signature “Louis Barnaba.” The attribution to Louis Barnaba is based on the visible signature. No separate expert appraisal or authenticity certificate is available.

Louis Barnaba (1826–1892) was a Belgian marine painter who particularly painted sea, coast, and harbor scenes.

Technique: oil on canvas
Dimensions without frame: ca. 84 × 115 cm
Dimensions with frame: ca. 100 × 130 cm
Frame: older wooden frame, included in the delivery

Condition: age-appropriate, clearly in need of restoration. The paint layer shows pronounced craquelure as well as abrasion and various smaller to larger gaps or damages. On the back of the canvas there are several older repairs and patches visible. The timing and extent of earlier restorations are not known. The condition is documented by the close-up photographs.
