XL RARE METEORITE CR2 - Carbonaceous Chondrite, ERG CHECH 003, sourced from Argelia in the Sahara region in 2021, weighing 60.17 g.
Description from the seller
The meteorite of this batch is a beautiful piece with size and quality for a great collection, of Carbonaceous Chondrite type CR2, found in Algeria in 2021. On it you can appreciate dozens of relief chondrules on the surface, something that usually happens when those chondrules are coated with metal. It is possibly paired with the CR2 meteorites classified under the name Erg Chech 003, since the typology and the area where it was found are the same.
The rare group of stone meteorites CR2 is represented by about 160 different examples, more than half of which were found in Antarctica and, therefore, not available to collectors. CR2s are carbonaceous chondrites, and the "R" in this sub-group derives from the name of the historic 1824 fall witnessed in Renazzo, Italy.
The matrix of carbonaceous chondrites has been altered by the presence of water, described as "aqueous alteration" in scientific terms, and that alteration probably occurred in the main body (asteroid). The CR2s show a particularly high incidence of hydrated matrices (up to 50% by volume). Some scientists believe that, by transporting water and other materials here, the carbonaceous chondrites of this type may have played a role in the evolution of life on Earth.
Carbonaceous chondrites are in general among the oldest materials in the solar system, over 4,700 million years old, that is, the first materials that solidified in the solar nebula, and therefore among the oldest materials ever described and found.
An excellent opportunity to add this wonder of the universe to your collection.
