Description from the seller
Full parchment hardcover binding with gilded decorations, title and author in gold on the spine.
1 blank sheet, [4], 120, 75, 84, 1 blank sheet
A wide collection of medical memoirs in the form of Morgagni's letters. It begins with some statements about the research method followed and the new idea of medical science built around pathological anatomy. There are treatises on various topics containing a vast number of original observations on the structure of the various parts of the human body (the laryngeal pockets, the idatide of the germinative gland, the urethral fossae, the neck muscles, the arterial valves of the heart, etc.). Subsequent treatises of a historical nature on other physicians and scientists. Morgagni (Forlì, 1682-Padua, 1771) was the greatest anatomist of his century, protected by kings and popes, professor in Bologna and in Padua, at which university medical students from all over Europe flocked to attend his lectures.
3 parts in one volume. Frontispiece in two colors red and black with a copper-engraved vignette. THE PORTRAIT IN THE FRONTISPIECE IS MISSING. Worm damage along the lower margin that becomes a hole up to halfway through the volume (including the frontispiece). Capital letter, running heads and tailpieces. Text in two columns. Extensive indexes. Each part is preceded by its own title page. Printed dedications to illustrious colleagues such as Haller, Zanotto et alii. Ex libris affixed to the flyleaf. Some marginal moisture stains. The copy is generally very clean and usable.
