Description from the seller
Marcel L.A. Cockx (Herent, 11 December 1930 – Leuven, 6 November 2007) was a Flemish neo-expressionist visual artist. His work includes paintings, pastels, drawings and watercolors.
Cockx pursued his education at the Leuven Academy under Jan Cobbaert. He would later teach there himself from 1956 to 1985.
His work was initially characterized as dark-expressionist and was influenced by the work of Constant Permeke. Later it evolved into a vivid color-expressionism. Cockx's work was exhibited both in solo and group exhibitions.
Marcel Cockx was a Belgian artist born in Herent in 1930 and who died in Leuven in 2007. He was a painter. Trained at the Academy of Leuven under J. Cobbaert and W. Paerels (1944-1955). Painted among other things landscapes, interiors, figures, flowers, but also drew inspiration from rural life, the farm, the circus, clowns, the world of the child. Evolved from dark expressionism (influence of Permeke) to a clear and strong color expressionism. From the press: “M.C. can best be typified as a color expressionist. His color palette is honest and pure. The somewhat hazy atmosphere that cloaks his themes subtly symbolizes the child’s dream world” and “The melancholic closedness of his characters, their quiet resignation, their serene acceptance of fate, being the pictorial expression of the artist's moral underpinning. The calm facture of his landscapes with their ripple-free contents, as well as the sobriety of the stage props also point in the same direction. His spontaneous zest for life, his exuberant happiness, his optimistic view on things find their translation through the exuberance of the applied color pattern” (S. Van Gelder, 1974). Leuven City Prize in 1966, the City of Aarschot and the municipality of Kortenberg in 1967. Works in museums in Leuven and Mechelen, in the collection of the Belgian State and the Province of Brabant. Was a teacher at the Leuven Academy (1956-1985). Listed in Bas I, II and Twee eeuwen signaturen van Belgische kunstenaars (PIRON).
