Description from the seller
a calligraphic Sixteenth century text and monophonic plainchant score
[ANON]
This is a Sequence (Prosa) — the chant sung at Mass between the Gradual/Alleluia and the Gospel on major feasts. Written for the feast of St Michael the Archangel.
C1580. 2 leaves (4 pages) of antiphon on vellum from a large antiphon.
The text page is from the Book of Revelations. "Draco hic dirus caput in unda pellit tartara, ducesque cum rebellibus celestia arce fulminat" which translates as "This fierce dragon casts its head into the waters of Tartarus, and [casts down] the leaders with the rebels, thundering from the heavenly citadel." This continues, and the Archangel Michael is named as the victor.
Musical notation with accompanying verbal score for a monophonic chant. In Latin.
There is some edgewear to the thick vellum, with a little loss. One small are are to the middle of the page has a slight loss affecting both sides. Overall an attractive piece.
A large size, having come from a Gradual of Liber Usalis.
Continental.
57cm x 41cm.
