Box - Russian lacquer box “Mstera – Horn players”, hand-painted - Wood

Rectangular Russian papier-mâché lacquer box, black lacquered and finished on the inside in red lacquer. The lid features a colorful, hand-painted lacquer miniature with a scene of four Russian folk musicians in traditional costume, set in a hilly landscape with village views.

The scene is framed by a fine gold-colored floral ornament on a black background. At the bottom of the scene the title in Cyrillic reads “Мстера. Рожечники” — Mstera. Horn players — and in the bottom right the initials “Л.П.”.

Mstera is one of the traditional Russian centers for lacquer miniatures. Such objects are typically made of papier-mâché, lacquered and then hand-painted. The inside is finished in red lacquer. Probably Soviet period or second half of the 20th century.
