Rated Excellent on Trustpilot.
Original late 20th‑century wooden Salawaku war shield from the Northwest Asmat of West Papua, measuring 150 cm high by 53 cm wide and in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
Offered for auction is a fine and authentic war shield from the Northwest Asmat region of West Papua, Indonesia.
Asmat shields were much more than defensive objects. They were closely connected with warfare, ancestry and the spiritual world. Traditionally, a shield could be named after a deceased ancestor or important warrior, whose strength and protective power were believed to accompany its owner. The deeply carved designs and figures on Asmat shields refer to this complex world of ancestors, animals, warfare and spiritual protection.
This is an older example showing the powerful sculptural quality for which Northwest Asmat shields are particularly appreciated. Despite its age, the shield has survived in remarkably good condition, with the carving and overall surface very well preserved.
Condition: remarkably good condition considering its age.
A strong and authentic example of traditional Asmat carving and an impressive object for a collection of Oceanic or tribal art.
Will be packed with care, sending worlwide
